The Humane Society is pushing to get black bear hunting banned in the state of California. They argue that the number of black bears in the state appears to “be low.”
Bill Gaines, an advocate for hunting, says the numbers reported are cherry-picked and aren’t accurate, stating the black bear numbers are at a historic high. Gaines agrees there needs to be an update in the bear management plan, but that plan doesn’t need to start with halting hunting.
The truth is hunters provide significant funds to wildlife conservation in the State of California through black bear hunting.
Here is some proof that black bear hunting in California results in high funds to look after this species:
Some simple math.
31,450 black bear licenses sold in 2021.
Each license costs $51.02.
31,450* x $51.02 = $1,604,579 *assumed that ALL tags were purchased by residents.
Total revenue generated for @californiadfw in 2021 from black bear tags.
Funding wildlife conservation- is one of the true consequences of hunting.
If California is successful in banning the hunting of black bears in the state, they will continue moving forward to try to stop hunting of other species.
