Frontlines Reporter Jonathan Choe Confronts Chicago's Gang Violence Problem Amid DNC Spotlight
Frontlines reporter Jonathan Choe with Chicago Pastor Scott Parker

Turning Point USA’s Frontlines reporter Jonathan Choe visited Chicago to shed light on the city’s ongoing struggles with gang violence and crime. Despite Chicago hosting the Democratic National Convention this year, the media has largely overlooked the violence and conflict plaguing the city, which has made it one of the most dangerous in America.

Choe ventured into some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods to speak with those directly affected by policies they believe have contributed to the city’s poor conditions. Among those he interviewed was Pastor Scott Parker, who has dedicated nearly two decades to helping young men escape gang life and turn their lives around. Parker, along with several men he has mentored, continues to work tirelessly to guide young men away from this dangerous lifestyle.

Some residents explained that social media has led to a rise in “clout chasing,” where young men in Chicago engage in gang activity in a bid for fame.

“You make more money becoming high profile as a rapper but the only way you can be high profile anymore is if you’re a killer,” Pastor Parker explained. “The rivalry is what kind of drives the audience.”

Choe also visited the infamous O Block, a residential area known for its high concentration of gang members. Residents explained to Choe the large presence of gang activity in the area, explaining how social media plays a role in gang retaliation.

Pastor Parker stressed that politicians at the national level must take action to help communities like those in Chicago, which are engulfed in violence. He also emphasized the importance of local community institutions, including churches, in playing a role in addressing these challenges.
