The state of Washington has some of the most intense COVID policies and mandates in the country, so it’s not surprising at all that the first-ever college football coach to be fired for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine took place at Washington State University.
Head coach Nick Rolovich and four of his assistant coaches (including the assistant head coach and co-offensive coordinator) have been fired for not complying with the governor’s mandate that all state employees be vaccinated by October 18th.
Despite Rolovich applying for a religious exemption, WSU did not address his request when announcing his termination at the school.
Slotback Travell Harris told reporters, “It means a lot having a coach that, first of all, is a players’ coach and truly understands us.” He’s an outstanding coach. He’s a coach we all love to play for.”
As Washington’s highest-paid state employee at $3.2 million per year, Rolovich stated, “I have elected not to receive a COVID-19 vaccine for reasons which will remain private… I will not comment further on my decision.”
Like many freedom-loving Americans, Coach Rolovich is not going down without a fight. His attorney, Brian Fahling, announced this morning that they will be suing the university for illegal termination, calling the athletic director and university’s decision “discriminatory and vindictive behavior.”
They also explained in a statement that Rolovich’s request for a religious exemption (which was denied by the university) was based on his “devout” Catholic faith. They claim the process was lackluster and that the university provided no reasoning behind their decision.
Good for Coach Rolovich for taking a stand and not letting tyrannical government leaders dictate his medical choices. Too bad his players will suffer the consequences of losing a beloved coach, mentor, and key player in their program.
