California Governor Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California will not be doing business with Walgreens after the company decided against distributing the abortion pill in 21 states.

Walgreens is under fire from left-wing activists after announcing that they will not be distributing Mifepristone after 20 attorneys general in conservative states threatened legal action. Walgreens stated that they plan to sell Mifepristone in any jurisdiction where it is legally permissible. “Once we are certified by the FDA, we will dispense this medication consistent with federal and state laws,” the company stated.

“We intend to be a certified pharmacy and will distribute Mifepristone only in those jurisdictions where it is legal and operationally feasible.”

Following Walgreens’ decision to adhere to state laws, Governor Newsom stated that his state “won’t be doing business” with the company because they “cower to the extremists and put women’s lives at risk.”

After Governor Newsom’s tweet, Brandon Richards, a spokesperson for the governor said California is reviewing all relationships between Walgreens and the state. “We will not pursue business with companies that cave to right-wing bullies pushing their extremist agenda or companies that put politics above the health of women and girls,” Richards said.

A Texas judge is currently reviewing a lawsuit against Mifepristone, and the ruling may result in a nationwide ban on medical abortions. Medical abortions are an alternative to surgical abortions, where drugs are used to terminate a pregnancy. Medical abortions account for the majority of abortions that take place in the United States.
