In the past few years, we have been given a glimpse into the future of how communism can erode democracy, and have been given the opportunity to prevent that from happening.

Former USSR KGB officer, now defector, agent Thomas David Schuman wrote in his book, “Love Letter To America” the tactics used by the communist party to manipulate the minds of individuals before taking over an entire country. He outlined the subtle ways in doing so in four steps:

  • Demoralization
  • Destabilization
  • Crisis
  • Normalization

Phase One: Demoralization. Schuman wrote that the “process of demoralization has many names: psychological warfare, ideological aggression, propaganda warfare etc. The KGB calls it ‘Active Measures.'” (Love Letter to America, 1984)

The process is slow but thoroughly planned out, no stone is left unturned in a communist take over. The communist would seek to demoralize the following institutions by various methods, politicize religion, confuse education, monopolize media, confound rights vs. obligation, break down the family unit, ultimately dismantling the population as a whole.

During the era of COVID-19, churches started quoting government issued statements from the W.H.O. or the C.D.C. more often than they did the Word of God. Many churches were complicit in their demise, allowing social justice whims to grab ahold of the congregate, eventually disregarding the Bible entirely.

Culture has been destroyed from within, as our nation’s role models have become Dr. Anthony Fauci, Lebron James, Ibram X. Kendi, and woke actors who make a living by selling liberal propaganda. These are purveyors of equality and justice, whose lifestyles and intellect would indicate otherwise, but whom the media has protected and built-up to be protectors of freedom — while they have slowly chipped away at real freedom behind the scenes.

In education: The introduction of explicitly sexual content to toddlers and minors without parental consent. Teachers shamelessly promoting life-altering decisions to their students rather than simply teaching them math. The endless radical indoctrination of young minds.

All of the above already occur, and far too often.

The lies blatantly and frequently spread by media outlets, big tech deeming which facts are favorable and which are dangerous enough to be labeled “misinformation” are all blaring warning signs.

Such simple, yet truly intentional actions have produced what we see in our society today. Ignorance, uninformed and baseless claims, unhealthy and addictive fads, and a rapidly decreasing sense of individual responsibility, have all added to the sad presence of disunity, isolation, hatred, and victimization.

Phase Two: Destabilization. Schuman writes that communist efforts tend to narrow down to the “essentials,” or internal power structures, of a target nation. These include the nation’s foreign relations, economy, and “social fiber.”

Schuman writes:

If the preceding stage of demoralization is successful, the subverter no longer has to bother about your ideas and your life. Now he gets to the ‘spinal cord’ of your country and helps you to bring your own society into the state of destabilization. That may take from 2 to 5 years, depending on the maturity of a nation and its ability to mobilize for resistance.” (Love Letter to America, 1984, pg 52)

Stage Three: Crisis. Schuman warns that times of crisis it will spring into action American ‘radicals’ and soviet ‘sleeper’ agents that will rise and take power as quickly and ruthlessly as possible. He continues by stating that during the crisis, “Chances are these leaders will be elected and given almost unlimited ‘emergency powers.‘” (Love Letter to America, 1984, pg 54)

“Emergency Powers…” sounds familiar, doesn’t it?

Phase Four: Normalization. If installed correctly and thoroughly for 2 to 5 years, through subtle but intentional implications, a society will see and accept these occurrences as normal. The old way of life will be gone, there will be a new age upon the nation.

Schuman’s last comments in his warning read as follows:

Some may take to fighting back physically and others to trying to escape, many will find themselves in prison charged falsely and unfairly, some even executed, quietly or publicly. Why? Simple: the Soviet ‘liberators’ will have no further use for the ‘disturbers’. The ‘useful idiots’ will have completed their work for them.” (Love Letter to America, 1984, pg 55)

At this point, you may ask, “How do we stop this from happening?” We in the United States of America live in a beautiful democracy upheld by the Constitution which gives unalienable rights handed down to us from God our Creator and what He gives, no man can take away!

The first amendment alone ensures that we have the right to petition our leaders and speak, no matter the social consequences. We lift up God when things become difficult, and cling to His everlasting truth at a time when lies and deceit spread like wildfire.

When forces come to demoralize, we moralize! We strive to keep our families together, we teach our children and friends to love reverence and to be reverent. We educate our students to equip them with how to be victors, not victims. We sanctify the meaning of life, and offer it every opportunity to survive. Finally, we come together in utmost unity to stand against the forces that will try to destabilize, bring us into crisis and normalize what we know beyond a shadow of a doubt is wrong and would attempt to overtake us.

Do we have work to do? Absolutely! But our pursuit of freedom has only just begun.
