The National Football League announced this week it would be playing the “Black National Anthem,” “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” before every game in the 2021-2022 season in addition to other social justice symbolism, like field graphics and stickers on helmets for BLM, Inc. and other causes.
The League says playing the song at every game is “an effort to reinforce the league’s 10-year, $250 million commitment to combat systemic racism.”
Systemic racism. In the NFL?
The NFL is perhaps the most racially equitable professional sports league in the world–let alone just the United States. In 2018, 58.9% of players were Black Americans–over half of all players in the League. The median salary of NFL players is well over half a million dollars annually–today, sitting at $860,000. In 2021, the top 4 highest players in the NFL are all people of color–Patrick Mahomes making $45 million/year, Dak Prescott making $40 million/year, Deshaun Watson making $39 million/year, and Russell Wilson making $35 million/year.
So… if the NFL needs to protest systemic racism… what exactly is the message they are sending to the next generation of Americans? That only some Black people in our country can be successful? That they are happy to see some of the highest salaries in the world go to people of color, but society says the next generation of Americans is forbidden to succeed thanks to their skin color?
The NFL protesting systemic racism makes absolutely ZERO sense–it defies all logic and fails to inspire and encourage the next generation of Americans. When you hear the “Black National Anthem” (how unifying, by the way), know that those in positions of leadership at the NFL aren’t looking to make change–they don’t need to–they are just interested in the facade of social justice.
The last time they pulled a woke, social justice stunt like this, ratings tanked. Expect the same with this.
