A Texas public school is teaching students that strong immigration laws and a border are “oppressive,” according to information obtained through a public records request.
The political messaging is taking place in a high school class titled, “Advanced Ethnic Studies: Mexican American Studies” at the Round Rock Independent School District. The goal of the class is for students to describe how events from the 1970s to the present day “strengthened systems of oppression against Mexican Americans, such as the strengthened immigration laws that made immigration from Mexico harder.”
The curriculum claims that being in favor of mass migration into the country is considered an act of “resistance and liberation.” Teachers of the curriculum must inform students that using words like “illegal” and “undocumented” to describe illegal immigrants “may perpetuate stereotypes.”
“The terms ‘illegal’ and ‘undocumented’ are often used to describe individuals who have entered or are residing in a country without proper legal authorization,” the curriculum reads. “However, these terms can carry negative connotations and may perpetuate stereotypes. It is important to approach these terms with sensitivity and recognize the complexity of immigration issues.”
A poem by Luis Alberto Urrea is listed in the curriculum and informs students that they’re vilifying people by using the words “illegal” or “undocumented.”
“Illegal alien, adj./n. A term by which an invading colonial force vilified Indigenous cultures by identifying them as an invading colonial force,” the poem reads.
The curriculum also promotes the work of Jolt Action, a left-wing advocacy group that calls for amnesty for all illegal immigrants. The organization champions issues such as “climate justice” and “diversity” and it considers healthcare and higher education to be “human right[s].”
Parents Defending Education, the parental rights organization that obtained this curriculum, told The Daily Wire that this curriculum is at odds with American values.
“Forcing students to sit through history courses dedicated to teaching through the lens of oppressor and oppressed is an effort to hijack the English language to manipulate and indoctrinate our most vulnerable in public schools,” Parents Defending Education Vice President Caroline Moore said.
Texas has been severely impacted by illegal immigration over the past several years, costing the state valuable resources, taxpayer funds, and more. According to the state’s Attorney General Ken Paxton, Texas residents have paid “between $579 million and $717 million” annually for “public hospital districts to provide uncompensated care for illegal aliens,” $152 million to “house illegal criminal aliens for just one year,” and “between $62 million and $90 million to include illegal aliens in the state Emergency Medicaid program.”
