When did teachers decide that they can dictate what students think, feel, and say? Professors are NOT the arbiter of truth, yet some of them go on an absolute power trip and feel they can shut up their students who think differently than them.
Turning Point USA’s most recent addition to the Professor Watchlist is Kelli Alvarez at the University of Oklahoma. She is an Assistant Teaching Professor specializing in race and ethnicity in literature and film as well as indigenous and other ethnic literature. Alvarez teaches freshman-level courses, including English Composition and has stated herself that, “In the classroom, free speech does not apply… as instructors, we can tell our students ‘no, you do not have the right to say that, stop talking right now.’”
Excuse me, what? DOESN’T HAVE THE RIGHT to say something?! Professor Alvarez needs to take a class herself because everyone has the right to free speech. It’s called your First Amendment!
I find it sickening that an ENGLISH COMPOSITION teacher is teaching students that they do not have the right to speak or write about certain topics. A teacher’s ONLY job is to TEACH students how to research a topic presented, evaluate all sides of the argument, and reach an informed opinion.
Not only is Alvarez teaching her students NOT to speak up, but she’s also leading her fellow colleagues in “censorship workshops.” These “workshops” are to discuss how to “set an anti-racist tone” in the classroom and ultimately silence the students who have opposing viewpoints.
Professors like Alvarez need to be held accountable for what they are doing to our future generations of college graduates. EVERYONE has the God-given liberty to say what they please whether Kelli Alvarez likes it or not.
