OpenAI released its newest ChatGPT model, GPT-5, on Thursday, applauding it as a major upgrade over previous versions with faster performance and new capabilities.
CEO Sam Altman described GPT-5 as “like having a team of PhD-level experts in your pocket. He called it a significant step toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), the ability for a machine to learn and perform any task a human can.
“I tried going back to GPT-4, and it was quite miserable,” Altman told reporters, according to CNBC.
The company says GPT-5 is its most advanced model yet, offering a more human communication style with users and its strongest coding abilities to date.
“GPT-5 has been trained to recognize when a task can’t be finished, avoid speculation and can explain limitations more clearly, which reduces unsupported claims compared to prior models,” explained post-training lead at OpenAI Michelle Pokrass.
One standout addition is the ability to create an app by users asking to code it through OpenAI’s new “vibecoding feature.” The model can also provide a wider range of varied answers to repeated questions.
GPT-5 is available to ChatGPT users at no extra cost, though usage limits apply for unpaid and lower-tier subscriptions. OpenAI expects ChatGPT to hit 700 million weekly active users this week. CNBC also reported the company is in talks with investors about a potential stock sale at a valuation near $500 billion.
The launch comes as the federal government is expanding its use of AI, reportedly integrating ChatGPT into multiple agencies.
“America is the country that started the AI race,” President Donald Trump said at a tech summit in Washington. “And as President of the United States, I’m here today to declare that America is going to win it.”
