Four US states have deployed National Guard soldiers to Washington, DC, to aid President Trump’s ongoing effort to clamp down on the “crime emergency” occurring within the district.

Last week, President Trump activated the National Guard and federalized the DC police in order to “help reestablish law, order and public safety” in the district.

West Virginia, Ohio, and South Carolina have sent hundreds of troops to the US Capitol. Mississippi was the latest to join the states. According to ABC News, “The number of soldiers responding is expected to reach more than 1,100 in the coming days.”

Moreover, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves will be sending 200 soldiers. There are presently 800 District of Columbia National Guard soldiers at the capital, an amount which the states that have deployed troops are looking to double.

On Monday, Governor Reeves issued a statement on his decision.

“I’ve approved the deployment of approximately 200 Mississippi National Guard Soldiers to Washington, D.C., to support President Trump’s effort to return law and order to our nation’s capital,” Reeves stated. “Crime is out of control there, and it’s clear something must be done to combat it. Americans deserve a safe capital city that we can all be proud of. I know the brave men and women of our National Guard will do an excellent job enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement.”

According to Mississippi Today, “In 2023, Reeves mobilized a National Guard unit to help with security at the U.S. border with Mexico. That came a day after Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis sent officers to Texas to assist with border security.”
