The media gets its power from one thing: us.

Whenever we turn on the news or scroll through social media, our eyes become the currency. Our online presence is immediately labeled as a way to produce ad revenue and higher ratings. For years, leftist media has prospered by knowing that they haven’t fallen short of viewers to keep their show on the run.

However, that is all starting to change. Let’s look at NBC, for example. NBC’s ratings recently plunged after the hiatus of Rachel Maddow, the program’s most prominent star. Maddow’s newly negotiated contract chronicles that she will no longer be doing her Daily Show. Maddow’s abrupt pause is only one factor that helps to explain the monumental nearly 30% loss of NBC’s audience, according to the latest figures detailed by Nielsen Solutions.

It’s obvious that NBC isn’t alone. Mainstream media is losing as more and more people are making the conscious decision to switch to independent news. And there is a good reason for this. Unlike most commonly recognized news sources, many independent journalists provide solely the facts- not the opinion. Americans want to come to their own conclusions and are tired of being inundated with tainted perspectives.

I believe in transparent thought, but I also believe in transparent news. While the news is still not where it needs to be, it’s important to recognize and celebrate when any corporate news conglomerate falls to the ruins. I call on you to continue to vote not only with your ballot but also with your attention. It’s clear that where we devote our time matters and can be used to effect meaningful social change.
