There it is, I said it.

Birds. Aren’t. Real.

If you’re not already aware, the ‘birds aren’t real’ movement is taking the nation by storm. And by that, I mean the Instagram page is blowing up. The @birdsarentreal IG has almost 400,000 followers and has even recently drawn attention from the New York Times. Finally. The movement we all need is getting some well-deserved attention.

If you’re not familiar with the birds aren’t real “conspiracy theory,” it’s a movement that’s trying to bring attention to the FACT that birds are really government drones sent to spy on us. It’s true. It’s happening. We should all be aware.

This is a brief explanation from the Birds Aren’t Real official page.

THE U.S. GOVERNMENT COMMITTED MASS BIRD GENOCIDE FROM 1959-2001, MURDERING 12 BILLION REAL BIRDS USING A POISONOUS TOXIN SPRAYED FROM AIRPLANES. AS THE REAL BIRDS WERE REMOVED, SURVEILLANCE DRONE REPLICAS REPLACED THEM. NOW ALL BIRDS IN THE U.S. ARE ROBOTS.

There you have it. The government killed all the birds and replaced them with surveillance drones to abolish Americans’ right to privacy. The devoted members of the ‘ain’t bird movement’ have shown up to rallies to protest the use of surveillance drone birds and have even attended official government meetings.

Now, here’s the kicker.

*spoken quietly as to not alarm the most devoted in the movement*

…we all know it’s a joke. We’re all aware. Nobody actually thinks all the birds are government drones. But it’s funny to play along.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of the massive divide in policy opinions within the country. People are getting increasingly intense about how they display their differences. They show up to rallies almost constantly and fill their social media feeds with things that, to them, “REALLY EFFING MATTER GUYS.”

The ‘birds aren’t real’ movement is a massive, unintentional jab at the insanity we see in so many facets of life. While the fervor of the ‘birds aren’t real’ movement is driven out of hilarity, that same intensity exists in so many other often discussed issues; CRT, COVID, elections, etc.

And that’s why it’s funny.

Hopefully, we can all look at the ‘birds aren’t real’ enthusiasts and 1) recognize the humor in it, and 2) start to realize the performative aspect that displays itself similarly among people that are as up in arms over other dumb things.

Politics has gotten more and more performative over the years, and we need to recognize that for what it is. It’s time to start looking at some of our politicians the same way we look at the birds – they aren’t real people; laughing along as if they’re telling a joke. Because in so many cases, they are.
