Social media and public outrage may have been the deciding factor for Texas Tech University to defend its students from an anti-freedom professor who tried to segregate his classroom of mask wearers vs. non-mask wearers, BUT, a win is a WIN!
An Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences named Dr. Dylan Schwilk tried to divide his students solely based on whether they wore a face mask or not despite the university not enforcing a mask mandate on the Texas Tech campus. Texas Tech does have two school policies that recommend masks but do not mandate them. They also do not have any social distancing policy being enforced.
Turning Point USA Ambassador Morgonn Blaire McMichael took to social media to voice her concern with this professor’s obvious discrimination toward unmasked students, sparking national attention.

In her post seen above, Morgonn pointed out Dr. Schwilk’s original email sent to his students expressing that “students who refuse to wear masks will be asked to sit on the right hand side of the lecture hall… so that there is more separation from those wearing masks.”
Since the increased media attention Dr. Schwilk brought upon himself and Texas Tech University, he has now been told he is NOT allowed to segregate his students in ANY way, including mask wearers vs. non-mask wearers.
Dr. Schwilk sent a follow-up email to his biology students, apologizing for his “erroneous suggestion” and acknowledging that the university’s rules only allow him to “request” students to wear masks, not require them, OR suggest any seating arrangement. The email from Dr. Schwilk can be seen below:

Incredibly grateful students taking Dr. Schwilk’s class have reached out to TPUSA Ambassador Morgonn, thanking her for bringing attention to this situation and sparking change on the Texas Tech campus. This is a major win for ALL students and a great reminder that you CAN make a difference in your local areas by speaking up about your values and standing firm in your beliefs.
