If we are frank, some of today’s culture is pretty gross: the trend of WAP, clap backs, and the social media “cancel culture” is just a few sad reflections of our society as a whole.
Unfortunately, politics is downstream from culture.
For example, let’s think back to Lizzo’s performance at the 2019 MTV Awards. Do you guys remember the giant blow-up butt she had on stage? I don’t mind a fun performance. But what I found odd was how almost every liberal female politician shared the video of Lizzo’s performance (featuring the big blow-up butt) onto their political pages with some encouraging message along the lines of “You GO, girl!”
My concern does not lie with instances like Lizzo’s performance and the drumbeat of liberal political support she received afterward. Instead, I am disturbed when I find our society’s thirst for a good comeback or a sassy gif moment makes its way into the political arena.
I believe politics can be fun, and politicians can be relatable to the American people instead of being stiff and unappealing. However, I’m getting sick of politicians thinking they can avoid discussing policy by instead hitting their opponents across the aisle with a vacuous, but a viral Twitter moment.
A parent’s primary role is not to be the “cool” parent or their child’s friend. A parent’s primary function is to raise their child to be a good person. The same thing goes with politicians. We should judge their character, not on their ability to go viral or be socially “woke,” but instead on their ability to lead, show compassion, and provide solutions that will take our country forward.
