The mayor of a small village in Illinois reportedly told taxpayers they “should be ashamed” for condemning her $300,000 salary, according to DailyMail.
Tiffany Henyard is the mayor of Dolton, which boasts just 20,000 residents. Henyard told village taxpayers, 91% of whom are black, they should be ashamed for allegedly “beating and attacking a black woman” in leadership positions.
“You all should be ashamed of yourselves because you all are black. You all are black,” Henyard said. “Are you all sitting up here beating and attacking a black woman that’s in power. You all should be ashamed of yourselves.”
Henyard received criticism following local news reports that she regularly gets her hair and makeup professionally done before public appearances. She reportedly also partakes in photo shoots for the county’s taxpayer-funded billboards.
The mayor spent tens of thousands of dollars on multiple first-class trips around the country, according to a report from local news outlet WGN. It’s been uncovered that Henyard and other officials in the county spent more than $67,000 of taxpayer money on trips to Portland, Austin, Atlanta, and New York City. Many of the flights were reportedly first-class tickets.
Henyard’s team reportedly spent $13,000 in public money on a singular trip to New York City.
Dolton’s Police Chief told local news outlets that the mayor’s spending habits have left the police underfunded. As budgets were cut for Henyard’s lavish lifestyle, many residents blamed her for a water main break and a mass shooting in the area.
“It’s unfortunate that politics are being played. What’s happened is a million dollars out of my budget have been cut because of politics,” Police Chief Lewis Lacey told reporters.
Henyard often refers to herself on social media as “God’s favorite.”
The mayor sparked further outrage after she created a new proposal that would cap the next mayor’s salary at $25,000, per Fox 32 Chicago. Many believe the proposal is “illegal” and is being used by the incumbent mayor to dissuade potential competitors.
Trustees in Dolton reportedly filed a lawsuit against Henyard as it has been alleged she forged and withheld financial records.
Henyard did not immediately respond to Turning Point USA’s request for comment.
