If there’s one thing I’m good at, it’s relaxing. One day I picture myself having a big TV that hangs right over my bathtub so I can relax even harder. I made sure to take some of my free time last week over Thanksgiving to watch some shows old and new that maybe you’ll want to check out. Let me know in the comments if you notice a theme with the kinds of shows I like.
- Run. (Hulu)
This suspense thriller was great. It’s the story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard with a twist. Sarah Paulson stars as a mother who is purposefully making her daughter ill. At the end, we discover the reason why and it’s bone-chilling.
2. 60 Minutes: The Woman With 2,500 Personalities (YouTube)
This debuted in 2019, but since it aired in Australia, that’s probably why I hadn’t heard about it. After watching “Crazy, Not Insane” last week, I’ve gone down a bit of a Dissociative Identity Disorder/Multiple personalities wormhole on the internet, which is where I found this fascinating and disturbing story. To summarize: typically, children develop DID when they go through childhood abuse. In Jeni’s case, hers happened to be so extreme that her brain created 2,500 personalities to deal with the trauma of sexual abuse and torture at the hands of her father.
3. Class Action Park (HBO)
People who grew up in or around New Jersey in the 80s have definitely heard of Action Park, America’s most dangerous water park. This documentary explains how and why such a park was allowed to be created in the first place and how it was able to stay open for over a decade with multiple fatalities. It’s one of the most unique true crime docs you’ll ever watch for sure.
4. Capturing The Friedmans (HBO)
After I noticed that this document makes almost every single “MUST WATCH” list, I checked it out. It was interesting and one that I’d recommend, but it didn’t end up being one of my favorite things I watched. It’s about a father and son in New York who end up embroiled in a massive child sexual abuse scandal.
5. Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions (Disney+)
If you loved Taylor Swift’s newest album, “Folklore” and are familiar with it at all, I highly recommend this. It’s super chill, and you basically just get to see Taylor in her element singing the album and giving fun facts about the songs periodically between jam sessions.
6. A Teacher (Hulu)
This show is SO GOOD so far. It’s about a female high school teacher who falls in love with one of her 18-year-old students. A handful of episodes have come out so far, so you can binge and catch up quickly. They’re also extremely short.
7. The Woman With 15 Different Personalities (YouTube)
Meet Paula, she has DID, and her “alters” range from a 15-year-old boy to a 40-year-old teacher.
8. Transhood (HBO)
This new documentary follows the lives of four transgender children over five years. This is a must-watch, even if it’s only for the little boy named Phoenix, who ends up telling his parents he’s not a girl at all, and his mother realizes her grave mistake.
9. Rewind (Amazon Prime)
This true story about a brother and sister who both ended up getting sexually abused by the same family members is disturbing and incredibly important. Throughout the film, which includes several decades worth of family video footage, you see the signs the children exhibited that were a cry for help that something was very wrong.
