Out of all the movies I loved watching as a kid, “Mulan” ended up being one of my favorites for multiple reasons: it had suspense (yes, I loved thrillers and scary movies even as a Babyservative), it had comedic relief (“dishonor on your cow”), and some of the best songs of any Disney movie PERIODT.
I was looking forward to the new live-action Mulan. Until I realized that Disney couldn’t leave what would have been a perfect story about family, bravery, and a strong female lead alone without injecting disturbing pro-communist ideals.
Before I lay out exactly how Disney kissed the feet of the Chinese Communist Party, I want to paint a clear picture of their problematic, contradictory behavior. Back in May, Disney CEO Bob Iger threatened to stop filming in Georgia because of their new heartbeat abortion law which prevents physicians from offering abortions if a fetal heartbeat is detected.
At the height of BLM riots Disney also had no problem posting their support.
Fast forward to present day with the Hong Kong protests going on. The lead actress in Mulan, Liu Yifei said, “I support Hong Kong’s police, you can beat me up now. What a shame for Hong Kong.”
Hong Kong protesters are literally fighting for freedom and to be left out of the communist rule by China. But go off sis I guess? And get this: after raising a stink about filming in Georgia because of a bill that PROTECTS life, they filmed part of Mulan in Xinjiang-WHERE THE CCP RAN CONCENTRATION CAMPS ARE IMPRISONING AN ESTIMATED 1 MILLION MUSLIMS.
But wait! There’s more! At the end of the film Disney THANKED the city in the credits for letting them film there!
If you don’t feel like you’re going to throw up in your mouth at this point, are you even paying attention? TLDR: Disney cares more about profits than true social justice or “police reform”.
