On the morning of July 25th, an active shooter opened fire at the Dallas Love Field airport in Texas. The woman arrived at the airport around 11 A.M. and went to a restroom where she changed her appearance then walked out into the airport traffic and began firing a handgun.

Police are unaware of what the woman was aiming at, but multiple rounds were recovered. According to local authorities, an officer immediately engaged the suspect. The suspect was shot and immediately taken into custody. Thankfully, no officers or travelers were injured in the event.

Police later identified the woman as 37 year old Portia Odufuwa. Later that day, police in Wylie, Texas confirmed that she has a previous criminal record of attempting to rob a bank in 2019.

I was actually at the DFW Airport, just 15 miles from Love Field, when the shooting occurred. I had my firearm with me, but it was unloaded and locked in its case because of the TSA requirements when flying with a firearm.

Thankfully this incident was prevented by law enforcement before any harm was done, however it was a reminder for me to always remain aware of my surroundings. It’s easy, especially when traveling, to get lost in your phone while walking through security and to your terminal. Wherever you are, armed or not, be aware of your surroundings, and prepared to handle the worst-case scenario.
