Backlash at UC Berkeley after Headlines the University is Implementing “Jewish-Free Zones”
A few weeks ago, news hit about UC Berkeley implementing “Jewish Free Zones” on campus. It was revealed that nine student organizations in Berkeley’s law school amended their bylaws to restrict inviting any speakers that support Israel or Zionism. This began after the group Law Students for Justice in Palestine asked other student organizations to ban all speakers who support Israel.
According to The Jewish Journal, “Berkeley Law’s Dean Erwin Chemerinsky, a progressive Zionist, has observed that he himself would be banned under this standard, as would 90% of his Jewish students.”
Berkeley’s School of Law Dean also sent the following message out to all students in the Law School:
“The First Amendment does not allow us to exclude any viewpoints and I believe that it is crucial that universities be places where all ideas can be voiced and discussed. In addition, the Law School has an ‘all-comers’ policy, which means that every student group must allow any student to join and all student group organized events must be open to all students.”
While I was traveling to UC Berkeley last week to interview students about various issues, we came across Israeli actress Noa Tishby. Tishby is speaking out about combating Antisemitism and Delegitimization of Israel. She was on campus visiting TIKVAH, the zionist voice at Berkeley to share how harmful and antisemitic the anti-zionist movement is.
Below, Tishby discusses antisemitism and anti-Jewish hatred seen on campus. If you discriminate against Zionism you are discriminating against the Jewish community.
Young Americans have a warped perception of what life in Israel is like and what the details are surrounding the Israel-Palestine conflict. You can read about my recent trip to Israel which includes my experiences learning about the culture of the country, visiting Israel’s military outposts, and going to the Temple Mount.
