What Cuban Protestors Can Teach Americans About Freedom

This week, Cuban citizens took to the streets by the thousands to protest extreme government overreach and fight for human rights. For decades, the citizens of this beautiful country have been subjected to an authoritarian communist regime led by the Castro family, where there is no right to freedom of expression, no ability to adequately provide for oneself and their family, and consequences for criticizing government involves torture and execution.

The shocking reality of how we arrived here in 2021 is that the talking points of the Cuban revolution are identical to the political rhetoric of the modern American Left.

This week, I joined Candace Owens of the Daily Wire on Candace to discuss the protests happening in Cuba and their impact on the political sphere around the world. Footage from an interview with Fidel Castro, former leader of Cuba and notorious dictator, was aired, which shared his rhetoric during and after the Cuban revolution. Castro said there was nothing “Communist” or “Marxist” about their movement–that they were first and foremost interested in “social justice” and Socialism. The words uttered by Castro could easily be interchanged with any political speech today given by Congresswoman AOC and the Squad, Vice President Kamala Harris, and President Joe Biden.

Today, the Left in America will refuse to admit suffering in Cuba is at the hands of a brutal communist dictatorship and instead blames human rights abuses, poverty, and desolation in the country on the United States and its embargo against Cuba. Why? Because they are terrified, people will realize the true end game of Socialism–equity of misery for all subjected to its strong grasp.

Here’s the thing about Socialism–it always starts as wanting to care for the least of these, promoting social justice, and advancing human rights. But power in government is the ultimate corrupting agent, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Socialism inevitably ALWAYS leads to the most shocking human rights abuses worldwide, poverty on a scale previously unimagined, and a lack of opportunity for every person, regardless of background. The Socialism preached by the American Left today is no different.

When Cubans march in the streets chanting “libertad” (liberty) and calling for an end to government rule over all of society–listen closely. They are willing to risk their safety, their livelihoods, and perhaps even their lives to fight for our most basic reality–freedom. Freedom is worth fighting for. It’s worth preserving. It’s what gives hope to those around the world who have never experienced it for themselves.

The protests happening in Cuba today are the reminder we need to stay resolute in our fight for the future of America–we are worth fighting for.
