President Trump Extends TikTok Deadline by 75 Days

President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the app to an American buyer or face a shutdown in the United States.

Trump announced the extension on Friday, revealing he is signing an executive order to keep TikTok active in the US for an additional 75 days to finalize a deal.

“My Administration has been working very hard on a Deal to SAVE TIKTOK, and we have made tremendous progress. The Deal requires more work to ensure all necessary approvals are signed, which is why I am signing an Executive Order to keep TikTok up and running for an additional 75 days,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

“We hope to continue working in Good Faith with China, who I understand are not very happy about our Reciprocal Tariffs (Necessary for Fair and Balanced Trade between China and the U.S.A.!). This proves that Tariffs are the most powerful Economic tool, and very important to our National Security!” he added. “We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark.’ We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

After taking office in January, Trump signed an executive order that set an April 5 deadline for ByteDance to divest TikTok to an American entity. This followed a law passed by Congress in April 2024 that required TikTok to be sold or removed from US app stores.

TikTok was briefly removed from app stores in January, but reinstated after Trump extended the deadline. While no final agreement has been reached, the president has expressed optimism that a deal will be made. The Trump administration is reportedly working on a plan involving investors such as Blackstone, Oracle, and other potential buyers who may lease TikTok’s algorithm from ByteDance, according to a report by CBS News.

Amazon and other tech companies have also shown interest in purchasing the platform.

During his presidential campaign, Trump vowed to “save TikTok,” and although he previously supported a ban, he has since pledged to broker a deal that allows the app to remain accessible to the 170 million Americans who use it.

“Turning Point USA is the fastest-growing youth movement in America, and they have a potential to play a decisive role in shaping our country for decades to come.”
