Illegal Immigrants to be Charged Nearly $1,000 Daily for not Self-Deporting

The Trump Administration will begin charging immigrants ordered to deportation a daily fee of $998 if they refuse to self-deport.
The CBP Home application – formerly known as the “CBP One app” during the Biden administration – is being used to manage and track the self-deportations and those being ordered to leave the US.
Assistant Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin addressed the initiative with Fox News:
“Illegal aliens should use the CBP Home app to self-deport and leave the country now. If they don’t, they will face the consequences.”
Illegal immigrants overstaying their time in the US, and those ordered to deportation, may also risk seizure of their property.
Fox News received a flyer connected to the initiative stating the words, “Self-deportation is safe. Leave on your own terms by picking your departure flight.”
The US will reinstate an unspecified 1996 law to apply “retroactive penalties on illegal immigrants for up to five years, which could result in fines over $1 million,” according to a White House official who told Reuters about the plan. Trump used this law during his first term as President.
According to Fox News’s report, there are a few benefits tied to this self-deportation initiative. These include allowing illegal immigrants without a criminal record to keep money earned in the US, and remain eligible for future immigration, legally, into the US. If they cannot afford a ticket they may be eligible for subsidized flights.
According to the Post Millennial, the White House prefers that US Customs and Border Protection(CBP) oversees the fining and property seizures of illegal immigrants. However, CBP prefers that ICE conducts these tasks instead due to an inability “to support implementing the fines.”
