A new analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data concluded that the immigrant population in America has skyrocketed in recent years, reaching a record high of 15% nearly 10 years ahead of the department’s projections.

The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) analyzed Census Bureau projections released in November, which predicted that the total number of foreign-born individuals living in the U.S. would not reach 15% of the country’s population until 2033. Just one month later, however, CIS reported, “The scale of immigration is so high that it appears to have made the new Census Bureau population projections, published on November 9 of this year, obsolete.”

“The Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey (CPS) shows that the total foreign-born or immigrant population (legal and illegal) was 49.5 million in October 2023 — a 4.5 million increase since President Biden took office and a new record high. At 15 percent, the foreign-born share of the U.S. population is also the highest ever recorded in American history.”

CIS noted that since President Biden took office in 2021, the immigrant population has grown by 4.5 million, which is “larger than the individual populations of 25 U.S. states.” The center estimates that more than half (2.5 million) of immigrants who have come to the U.S. since 2021 entered illegally; however, CIS stipulates in its report that the actual number of illegal immigrants could be higher than this, as the Census Bureau is not able to account for “gotaways” not processed by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The number of foreign-born immigrants has increased at an average rate of 137,000 a month since January 2021, according to the analysis. A Congressional report released in October found that 99% of illegal immigrants who entered the U.S. since 2021 have been allowed to remain in the country as the current White House administration reduces deportations amid skyrocketing illegal entries.

In fiscal year 2020, CBP encountered 400,651 illegal immigrants at the southern border and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested 103,000 and deported 186,000 immigrants, according to the Wall Street Journal. Under President Biden in FY2022, CBP encountered 551,930 illegal immigrants, but ICE made just 143,000 arrests and 72,000 deportations.

In the past two years, more than 70,000 individuals have illegally entered the U.S. from Middle Eastern nations, including 6,386 individuals from Afghanistan, 538 from Syria, and 659 from Iran.
