Universities Cancel Classes, Coddle Students Following Election

Universities across the country have canceled classes, rescheduled exams, and offered students “destress sessions” following the results of the election. Some schools offered students milk, cookies, puzzles, and Legos to aid them in dealing with election results.

A professor at Columbia University granted students permission to skip class and gave students extension on homework assignments to deal with the alleged stress of the election results, according to screenshots obtained by the Washington Free Beacon

“I hope you are hanging in there. I have been think[ing] of you over the last few days,” the Columbia professor wrote to her students. “[If] you don’t feel up to class, absences today will be excused.”

Professors at Barnard College — Columbia’s sister school — mimicked similar sentiments to their classes. One professor reportedly pushed back a scheduled midterm.

“In recognition of the increased stressed [sic] some of you might be feeling because of the election results, I will offer to replace your midterm Exam 2 grade with your Final Exam grade is better,” the professor said.

Another professor at Barnard canceled class Wednesday because “it feels a bit tone-deaf to deliver … [a] lecture on modern polling methods and their blind spots” following election day.

“Be good to yourselves, check in on your friends,” the professor wrote in an email to the whole class.

A Northwestern University political science professor canceled his class following the election, though the topic of the class is public opinion and voting behavior.

“Please take some time today to focus on what you need (e.g. time alone in stillness, time alone walking/moving, venting with others, celebrating with others, consuming more news, turning off the news,” the email reads.

Several universities, including the University of Pennsylvania, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Duke University, and Yale University, held wellness sessions for students to cope with the results of the election.

“Turning Point USA’s commitment to the fight for freedom on campus is more important now than ever.”
