Musician Neil Young wrote a since deleted letter to his management company demanding that the streaming service Spotify take down his music. Young states, “I am doing this because Spotify is spreading fake information about vaccines – potentially causing death to those who believe the disinformation being spread by them,” he wrote. “Please act on this immediately today and keep me informed of the time schedule.”
“I want you to let Spotify know immediately TODAY that I want all my music off their platform,” he continued. “They can have [Joe] Rogan or Young. Not both.”
Well, given that Neil Young’s music is gone from Spotify, we see who they chose from this ultimatum. Personally, I think it’s quite pretentious to think you have enough leverage to take down Joe Rogan, who averages 11 million downloads on each podcast. This narrative that Joe Rogan is a villain and needs to be taken down is overplayed. The only thing that Joe Rogan does is give people the opportunity to hear from all sides. That’s it.
Another thing that’s worth pointing out in this story is the hypocrisy in terms of this very selective cancel culture. Yes, let’s demand to take Joe Rogan down for “misinformation” but allow the plethora of rappers to spew out nothing but misogyny and violence. Makes total sense, right?
