The Left hates the idea that there are other ideas. As the founder of Turning Point USA, I’ve said this for years. But it’s a thought that most often comes to the front of my mind each time we begin a new Fall semester on college campuses across America—because that’s when students leave the normality of their home lives, often in peaceful, principled communities across the country, and return to the intellectually barren islands of totalitarianism we typically call university campuses.
Through the years, we’ve seen some seriously deranged responses to Turning Point’s mere presence on campus. Like when Hayden Williams was sucker-punched at UC Berkeley in 2019 or when TPUSA activists were ambushed by a zombie-like Marxist at the University of Michigan in the same year. And more often than not, they don’t even know what they’re protesting—just like these students on the campus of North Carolina State University.
However, thanks to the Fauci lockdowns over the past year and a half, we’ve been in a bit of a drought due to these all too common campus confrontations. But with our activists back on campus now, it’s clear to me that the violent apparatchiks who haunt our universities didn’t spend their year at home studying tolerance or meditating.
No, in fact, it seems like they came back with scores of pent-up rage, and they’re here to wreak havoc again. This Friday, September 10th, we had the inaugural Leftist freak out of the 2021 TPUSA tabling season, where the students of Michigan Tech University were approached by a seemingly androgynous, skirt-wearing, purse-carrying, mask-clad maniac who proceeded to violently flip over a table of materials meant to encourage a love of America one day ahead of the 20th anniversary of 9/11.
In the video, you can almost see him (Zim? Xer, perhaps?) become triggered by the Red White and Blue tabling materials and then sprung into action by his anti-American rage as he turns his ire towards the plastic table manned by Michigan Tech TPUSA chapter members.
Chris Howse, a Senior TPUSA Field Representative for the ‘Rapids Territory’ — seen in the video trying to mitigate the situation — had this to say about the event:
We were working our table at Michigan Tech’s organization fair, and a man* in a hat, sunglasses, mask, and dress approached the table really quickly asking how he* could sign up for our club. We handed him* the form on our iPad, and he* acted like he* was filling it out while ignoring my friend’s question about how he* became interested in the organization. I started talking to another student, and then he* flipped the whole table while screaming that “we’re fascists.” … I tried to get in between him* and the table and told him* firmly he* needed to leave. He* screamed “we’re fascists” the whole time.
Chris rightly points out an all-too-familiar irony our Turning Point activists are confronted with every semester: that those screaming the loudest in opposition to ‘fascism’ and ‘intolerance’ are very often the most fascist and intolerant among us.
The beskirted trouble maker left eventually, and the chapter leaders regrouped. Embracing the ‘Happy Warrior’ spirit we hold dear at Turning Point USA, Chris was proud to let me know that the whole affair generated a lot of interest in their chapter.
“Nearly 200 kids came to support us,” he said, “and the school isn’t even that big.”
So on a campus of just over 7,000 students, we’re happy to find a silver lining in knowing that, despite the best efforts of mentally ill apparatchiks at Michigan Tech, the Turning Point USA Field Program is back on campus and we are stronger, more well-equipped, and fired up to continue reaching thousands and thousands of college and high school students across America.
