Oklahoma Makes it a Felony for Healthcare Workers to Medically Transition Minors

Oklahoma has become the latest state to ban puberty blockers and hormone treatments for minors who identify as transgender.
Governor Kevin Stitt has signed SB613 into law, making it illegal for healthcare workers to medically transition any patients under the age of 18 in the state. Under this new law, any healthcare provider who prescribes puberty blockers or hormone treatments to minors will be charged with a felony.
According to the Governor’s office, the bill specifically bans “any medications or surgical procedures for the purpose of gender transition.” Healthcare workers who violate this law can be subject to civil actions filed by the parents of the children who are illegally treated.
“Last year, I called for a statewide ban on all irreversible gender transition surgeries and hormone therapies on minors so I am thrilled to sign this into law today and protect our kids. We cannot turn a blind eye to what’s happening across our nation, and as governor I am proud to stand up for what’s right and ban life-altering transition surgeries on children in the state of Oklahoma.”

More than a dozen states have already passed similar legislation to Oklahoma’s new law. In February, Utah passed a law that bans all medical transitions for youth. Last month, Indiana followed suit by banning puberty blockers and hormone therapy for minors as well.
The growing number of states banning such practices comes as more Americans begin to question the “benefits” and long-term effects of minors undergoing irreversible medical treatment to transition. Studies have also shown that more than 80% of children who identify as transgender eventually grow out of it once they reach adulthood. Oftentimes referred to as the “medical transition conveyor belt,” once children are handed over to the medical establishment, they are placed on puberty blockers, then fast-tracked to receive cross-sex hormone drugs, and eventually, undergo transition surgeries. This is done with the promise that feelings of gender dysphoria and social incongruence will be alleviated — which is simply untrue.
“What little information is available to the public also suggests that sex-change surgeries and medical transitions increase the risk of suicidality among adults. Stats for Gender, explaining one study’s findings, writes, ‘After sex reassignment surgery, one study showed that adult transsexual clients were 4.9 times more likely to have made a suicide attempt and 19.1 times more likely to have died from suicide, after adjusting for prior psychiatric comorbidity.’”

The White House has strongly opposed similar state measures, arguing that the use of hormone blockers by transgender youth is “gender-affirming care.” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has stated in the past that this administration does not believe the issue of trans-youth medically transitioning should be decided by legislators.
