Moderate Conservatives, When you Say you’re ‘Socially Liberal,’ are you Really?

There is something to be said for people who have convictions. Standing firm in beliefs and not wavering from morality is admirable. However, there is a common response people give when you ask them their political preferences but they don’t want to risk offending anyone: “I am socially liberal and fiscally conservative.”
This expression used to mean that you agreed with the conservative approach to economic policies like spending, taxes, and deficit reduction, but you may also favor liberal arguments to cultural issues like being pro-gay marriage or pro-abortion. When you used to use this typical response by saying you’re a little of both, it felt reasonable and a way of avoiding being a part of the extremism of either side. But now, the left has moved the goalpost so far that I can promise you this: you are NOT socially liberal anymore. The left has moved so further left that even their moderate stances start to sound extreme.
Here are just a few examples that we have heard from the left. In 2022, being socially liberal means that you support drag shows for children. It means that you believe children can identify as transgender and should be able to mutilate their genitals without parental consent. Modern social liberals believe men can give birth and breastfeed, that men should be allowed to compete in women’s sports, and that men can’t have an opinion on abortion despite being told men CAN HAVE abortions.
All of this is non-sensical, but these stances are becoming mainstream in liberal politics.
We cannot normalize the extremism of the left in the name of being “socially liberal.” Call it what it is: crazy. The United States is still a country with a culture that is center-right. Most Americans are not going to favor such extreme policies in their community when the opportunity is presented. So the next time you say you’re socially liberal, remind yourself what liberal politicians are pushing for and think if those are beliefs that you agree with.
