Illegal Immigrants Sleeping on the Streets of New York as City Runs Out of Shelter Space

After New York City ran out of space in hotels and shelters, illegal immigrants have no choice but to sleep on the streets.

New York, the city that proudly boasted its “right to shelter” law, is currently facing its latest challenge as illegal immigrants sleep on the streets due to the city running out of room in hotels and shelters. Since last year over 90,000 illegal immigrants have made their way to the city and New York has reached capacity as the city struggles to house the influx of migrants.

The Roosevelt Hotel, a hotel used as a processing center and shelter for migrants in the city is currently surrounded by a group of single adult male migrants who are currently sleeping on the street surrounding the hotel.

On Monday, New York reporter, Michelle Arezouross, took a video of a line of migrants sleeping along the sidewalk detailing how this scene is now common for everyday New Yorkers.

“Now these are asylum seekers, they arrived in New York City a couple days ago hoping to get processed at the Roosevelt Hotel,” she explained showing the line of migrants sleeping on the street. She went on to explain how the Roosevelt was once an iconic hotel, making appearances in movies but shut down three years ago and is now being used as an intake center for illegal immigrants.

“This weekend they were at capacity so these migrants were left to sleep on the sidewalk,” she continued. She went on to discuss how over 93,000 illegal immigrants have made their way to the city since last spring. The surge has left the city overwhelmed as the city’s “right to shelter” law requires shelter be provided to anyone who asks for it.

Initially, Mayor Eric Adams stated that New York City was set to pay up to one billion dollars to shelter and feed migrants. That number has since risen and city officials are estimating the new budget to be around four billion as migrants continue to surge in.

“We have no more room in this city, and we need help,” Adams stated in a press conference the other week.

Mayor Adams, in an attempt to get this crisis under control, has appealed to the federal government for help and has since called for securing the southern border.

“We need to control the border,” he began, “we need to call a state of emergency and we need to properly fund this national crisis,” the Mayor declared.
