Denver High School Under Investigation After Converting Girls’ Bathroom to ‘All-Gender’

The Department of Education under the Trump administration has launched an investigation into Denver Public Schools after a high school converted a female restroom into an “all-gender bathroom” for the purposes of “inclusivity and equity.”
According to a letter obtained by The Daily Wire, the Department’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) notified Denver Public Schools Superintendent Alex Marrero that it is investigating East High School over the bathroom policy. The school converted a girls’ restroom into a multi-stall facility open to both male and female students over the winter break.
“According to recent local reporting, the District converted a girls’ restroom in East High School to a multi-stall all gender restroom,” wrote Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights Craig Trainor. “As a result, East High School now has an exclusive restroom for male students and no restroom for female students on its second floor.”
The OCR’s investigation will determine whether the decision violated the civil rights of female students who lost access to a sex-specific restroom in that area of the school.
“OCR’s directed investigation will examine whether the District discriminates against students on the basis of sex by installing multi-stall all gender restrooms in District school facilities, in violation of Title IX and its implementing regulations,” the letter added. “Be advised that OCR’s initiation of a directed investigation is not itself evidence of wrongdoing.”
The school made an announcement at the beginning of the month to address the bathroom change. It argued that the decision was part of the school’s “commitment to inclusivity and equity, providing a welcoming space for all students.” It explained that stalls were designed for “privacy” and “security” and insisted that “multi-stalled all-gender bathrooms do not increase risk of violence or assault.”
However, many parents strongly opposed the decision. During a school board meeting, parent Lori Ramos criticized the move, arguing it disregarded the needs of female students.
“Administration has sacrificed the comfort of these young females for this dubious change by now limiting their options,” said Ramos, according to 9News. “We, as adults, should be protecting students at all costs. Not using minors for this social experiment. This in my opinion is unlawful, immoral and is, in fact, a form of abuse.”
