The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has officially recommended a third booster for the COVID-19 vaccine for elderly and high-risk Americans. During a meeting on Wednesday this week, the Food and Drug Administration formally approved the third shot for three demographics of people: seniors aged 65 and over, those at high risk of severe COVID-19 symptoms, and those at high risk of exposure to the virus.
In the midst of the approval process for boosters, two top vaccine officials have announced their resignation from the FDA, citing concerns with the rushed process and pressure placed on the agency by President Biden’s Administration.
As boosters become a new part of the conversation for COVID vaccines, it’s possible boosters for other demographics and age groups may be part of the vaccination process moving forward. However, at this time, boosters have not been approved for Americans aged 16-65.
