BREAKING: Supreme Court Rules New York Carry Law Unconstitutional

In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court has ruled that New York’s concealed carry law violates the second amendment. This decision will end New York’s conceal carry law that requires all citizens to have “proper cause” to carry a gun in public.

Justice Clarence Thomas, who wrote the majority opinion, states the following:

“Nothing in the Second Amendment’s text draws a home/public distinction with respect to the right to keep and bear arms, and the definition of “bear” naturally encompasses public carry. in the Second Amendment’s text draws a home/public distinction with respect to the right to keep and bear arms, and the definition of “bear” naturally encompasses public carry. Moreover, the Second Amendment guarantees an “individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation, and confrontation can surely take place outside the home.”

The Supreme Court decision is a major blow to restrictive gun laws, and a major victory not just for gun activists but for all citizens who want to protect themselves with a firearm. The decision will likely lead to a crackdown on states that have “may issue” carry laws.

Here’s what that means:

Most states’ conceal carry laws fall into two categories: “shall issue” and “may issue.” Currently, 43 states (including DC) are “shall issue.” This means that the state must grant conceal-carry permits to all citizens who apply for one and meet the requirements.

“May issue” states require an applicant to provide a valid reason to carry a firearm in public. A state with “may issue” conceal carry permit laws gives the state the discretion to decide who gets a conceal-carry permit, even if the citizen meets all requirements.

Denying a law-abiding citizen the right to carry a firearm in public is a blatant infringement on the second amendment. The Supreme Court should be applauded for its decision. Hopefully, this decision leads to the repeal of other unconstitutional gun laws throughout the country.

And as a reminder to all firearm owners who are celebrating this decision: remember to always practice responsible gun ownership and be an example to those who disagree with the Supreme Court ruling.
