Know The Facts: The Legacy of Christopher Columbus

“In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”

In doing so, he discovered new territories and is considered the very embodiment of Western civilization as a whole. This is why the left cannot stand him. Leftists love nothing more than to hate those from our history that contributed to the lifestyles that they have the privilege of enjoying today. Yes, the very same left who have initiated campaign after campaign to have his statues removed (or at the very least defaced), as well as try to change his Wikipedia in efforts to cancel & paint him as some genocidal maniac. More notably, the left has even tried renaming Columbus Day “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” to switch the acknowledgment to the indigenous tribes in these Western territories at the time of Columbus’s arrival instead of just simply appreciating a great man’s contribution to the world. Per usual, the left’s ungrateful push to demonize the very man whose autodidactic navigational skills paved the way for expansion into the West, which, as we know, was a necessary step to lay the groundwork for the formation of the greatest civilization known to man.

So let’s carefully consider Columbus’s case for a moment:

After being rejected by the Portuguese crown, Christopher Columbus eventually went to Queen Isabella of Spain to ask for funding for his voyage to find a new passage to the West Indies. After being originally rejected by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella, they eventually agreed to fund his expedition, and in the year 1492, the Italian explorer set sail on one the most important voyages in history, with few navigational tools at his disposal. After sailing for quite some time, he directs his crew towards spotting flickers of light in the distance. He eventually spots land, docked on the island of San Salvador in the Bahamas, and ultimately comes in contact with the native Taíno people.

For a while, things were peaceful between the exploring Italians and the Taíno’s, as Columbus explicitly instructed his men not to take advantage of the primitive people. However, other warring tribes in the area were not so friendly, as they attacked an established settlement of his, burning it to the ground and killing his men. Still, showing immense restraint, Columbus did not retaliate. There were also reports of other incidents where he interceded on the behalves of different indigenous tribespeople and saved their lives from certain death. This showcases he was more than just a “man who sailed the ocean blue,” but was also a man who engaged in domestic politics, as well as exercised diplomacy on an international level.

Then came the political accusations levied against him from one of his rivals, for which such allegations of tyranny made their way to Queen Isabella. She was all too willing to give an audience to such matters due to mounting frustrations regarding the lack of complete payment on her investment for Columbus’s voyage. The final nail in the coffin for his reputation came at the hands of his political rival, Francisco de Bobadilla, who came into power and vehemently condemned the Italian voyager through detailed & documented musings. These documents are constantly used by the left to debase Columbus, shred his legacy, and belittle his accomplishments. Even in the present day (especially whenever Columbus Day comes around), many left-wingers downplay the importance of such a brave man and quote the written condemnation, vilifying an iconic explorer by his avowed enemy – Bobadilla.

The question is then raised, why would the left blindly accept at face value the account of Bobadilla in relation to the conduct of Columbus? Shouldn’t the overt bias of political rivals be called into question when deciding the integrity of someone’s condemnation? Should historians 500 years in the future trust ONLY the monography of President Joe Biden for an accurate historical take on his political rival, former President Donald Trump? Would we fear there is too much room for biased interpretations that’ll distort the facts (or do away with them altogether) in efforts to absolutely debase his political and ideological nemesis? In essence, is it too much out of the realm of possibility for someone to maliciously slander the legacy of someone they dislike? No, not at all, as shown in the case of Columbus’s legacy being marred by historically illiterate activists.

Also, something else to consider – why would the left only accept such a negative review of Christopher Columbus? One such explanation lends credence to the fact he was a devout Catholic. Columbus would have his youngest sailors hold prayers regularly during his first voyage to the new world. More to the point, if there is one thing the left cannot stand, it’s religion, particularly religions and religious sects that adhere to Christ-centered teachings. Though this fact remains undisputed, a more damningly plausible explanation points to the left’s vitriol for those who dare explore new lands for colonization, most notably when it came to Western expansion. As the exploration into the West commenced, local warring violent indigenous tribes were often times beaten back by superior forces not native to the region. Although, conquest has been “the law of the land” since the inception of time (including the indigenous tribes residing in the land now called America, its outlying neighbors, and smaller territories), the left oftentimes condemns the West primarily for this practice, showcasing once again the convenience of their arbitrarily applied standards.

So ladies and gentlemen, as the cases mount against Christopher Columbus from the left, understand this brave man was a pioneer, one who paved the way for Western civilization and expansion. Do not let the left deceive you into turning your back on a man that is worthy of praise and admiration, but instead combat their lies and misinformation with cold hard facts. Let us all appreciate where we are in Western society, which would not have been possible by the late, great, devout Catholic, autodidactic explorer named Christopher Columbus.

Happy Columbus Day!
