Judge Orders Shoe Company ‘MSCHF’ To Cease Sales Of Lil Nas X’s Satan Shoe
There was an internet apocalypse when Country-Rapper, Lil Nas X initially announced his collaboration with MSCHF to release a “Satan” sneaker decorated with a pentagram and containing real human blood. Now, Nike is suing for trademark infringement for the company using their product.
MSCHF is a 7 person Brooklyn-based viral project creator. Gabriel Whaley, MSCHF’s CEO, has said that the company runs on “structured chaos.” Basically, they create periodic product “drops.” Nothing is off limits. Everything is absurd. Some of these limited edition drops include a stock trading application based upon astrology, Holy Water infused “Jesus Shoes,” a toaster-shaped bathbomb and Hermes Birkin Bag Birkenstocks that retailed for a paltry $70,000.
If you think that’s a lot of money, MSCHF and Lil Nas X might be on the hook for a lot more than that if Nike has its way. Nike quickly filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in New York alleging that MSCHF and Lil Nas X infringed on and diluted its trademark. They also indicate that the altered kicks have hurt Nike’s reputation. Here’s what the official legal complaint says:
“In the short time since the announcement of the Satan Shoes, Nike has suffered significant harm to its goodwill, including among consumers who believe that Nike is endorsing Satanism.”
After sorting through evidence and hearing arguments from both sides this morning, a federal judge has ordered MSCHF to cease sales of the sneakers. For now, at least.
‘Hellish’ is a great way to describe this whole situation. The best course of conduct would be ignoring it. Don’t feed the satanic beasts.
