Human Events Special – Operation Nordstream
You may remember back in September when the Nord Stream pipeline suffered an explosion that stopped the exportation of natural gas from Russia to the rest of Europe. The incident raised many questions regarding who or what was responsible for the damage, but not explanation was given. Some speculated that NATO was responsible, and others hypothesized that Russia self-sabotaged their own pipeline in order to blame the west.
But now, journalist Seymour Hersh has released a bombshell report claiming that the United States was responsible for the attack on the Russian pipeline.
According to Hersh, the U.S. carried out an operation to destroy the pipeline under the cover of the NATO exercise BALTOPS 22, a maritime exercise not too far from where the Nord Stream pipelines are. NATO divers planted mines along the pipeline which were later remotely detonated on orders of the White House. Hersh claims that this operation was conducted to prevent Russia from weaponizing natural gas for political and territorial gain. Should Hersh’s claims be true it leaves many to wonder how Russia, a nuclear power, responds to this operation that can be characterized as an act of war.
Nord Stream 1 allowed the Russians to sell Germany liquified natural gas for pennies on the dollar compared to what the U.S. was offering to sell. It also allowed Germany to bypass Ukrainian pipelines. But after this operation was conducted, Germany and the rest of Europe now has to increase their dependence on the U.S. for their energy. So was this a motivating factor in the United States’ decision to carry out this operation?
