When Defund the Police Backfires for Chicago, Mayor Lightfoot Pleads for Federal Help
I’m sorry, have you seen this?!
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot addresses the public safety issue in the now most dangerous city in the country, months after she says she’s going to cut police funding by $80M!
I don’t know how I’m just now catching wind of this gem. Maybe I was distracted by the holidays or too busy enjoying the largest pro-America event in the movement called AMERICA FEST.
Who knows. But oof, talk about contradicting yourself. You can watch the full public address HERE.
Here’s a little summary:
- Mayor Lightfoot falls into the ‘defund the police movement’ and cuts $80M from the Chicago PD budget in 2021.
- Crime rises (lol, weird)!
- At the end of 2021, Chicago announced its homicide rate was the highest in 25 years.
- December 2021, Mayor Lightfoot makes moves like:
- Addresses public safety as her #1 concern.
- Publicly asks The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) to come to Chicago and crackdown on illegal firearms for 6 months.
- Plans to increase the 2022 police budget.
Didn’t see that coming… haha just kidding!
Not trying to rant on this one, but speaking from experience, here are my thoughts:
- Mayor Lightfoot needs to stop chasing brownie points and instead be a leader. Her stunt last year satisfied the George Floyd supporters, but now that it’s backfired, she’s trying to save face and “re-fund” the police. Stop being influenced by reactive people and be a leader.
- Defunding the police does not save lives. The George Floyd incident was unfortunate, but as a result, Chicago has the highest homicide rate in 25 years, the highest in the country, and leaving officers dead like Ella French. So in her mindset in 2021, she’s calling it even? Disgusting.
- After what law enforcement was put through in 2021, Mayor Lightfoot is now asking these men and women to put their lives in more danger to seize illegal firearms. Oh, but don’t worry, ATF will be there to help too. And for what? So in 6 months, she can say, “look how I restored public safety?”
Want a solution? Arm your law-abiding citizens. Educate your citizens. Give your citizens back their right to defend themselves.
I hope cities like Chicago will learn.
