SCOTUS: Free Speech on Campus WINS!
The Supreme Court of the United States has just issued a ruling confirming students’ ability to sue their university administrations for violating their rights under the First Amendment!
Chike Uzuegbunam of Georgia’s Gwinnett College was repeatedly shut down by his administration to distribute Christian materials on campus and evangelize. The school argued that Uzuegbunam’s actions amounted to “fighting words” and therefore were not protected under the First Amendment. Still, SCOTUS confirmed Uzuegbunam as the winner of the case–upholding his rights to freedom of speech and religion on campus.
What a HUGE win for free speech for college students, and what a reason to celebrate!
Today, college students constantly have to fight for their rights to free speech on campus. Working with TPUSA, I see this reality firsthand for our students nationwide every day. To see a victory, especially this one from the nation’s high court, is essential for students continuing this fight for their First Amendment rights across the country!
Every student deserves the right to speak their mind and share their values. After hearing a story like Chike’s, I am so excited to see Christian students continue to embrace this call to action on campus! It’s inspiring for all of us.
