NYU Students Demand Reparations, Cut Ties With NYPD

More than 250 students at New York University have demanded the university issue reparation payments to black students and cut all ties to the New York City Police Department.

In a letter written by the school’s Justice Lab, nine separate demands are outlined for the administration, including the two mentioned above. However, the students who authored the letter clarify, “the demands we present are not a solution or salve for the harm that educational institutions have inflicted upon Black people.”

The demands include “scholarships for descendants of slavery, hiring of more black faculty, increased funding for black student groups and dismantling of ties with the New York Police Department.”

If reparations are enacted, NYU would be among the first higher ed institutions to pay slave descendants financial compensation–though not the first. Last year, Georgetown University students demanded a similar concept and the administration enacted a reparations payment program.

What do you think about the demands from these NYU students? Let us know in the comments! 👇
