National Divorce is not a Viable Solution

The governmental response to COVID-19 on a local, state, and federal level prompted many citizens to reevaluate which state they choose to live in. Many realized how much authority their state government has over their lives and promptly moved to states that allowed them to have more individual freedom. The nation quickly saw a mass exodus from liberal states to conservative states. Many people packed up their belongings and moved to conservatives havens like Arizona, Texas, and Florida.

As a consequence of this, liberal states became more liberal and conservative states became more conservative. The concept of federalism and allowing states to govern their people differently continues to gain popularity as our nation continues to disagree over how we should be governed and what values should and should not be implemented in our culture.

But now there is a popular talking point among conservatives for the United States to implement a “national divorce.” In other words, conservative states should secede from the union and form their own country.

This is not a viable solution to our nation’s current problems.

The consequences of a national divorce would be dire. Make no mistake: splitting the United States into two countries would lead to a massive war. The U.S. economy is too integrated to ever be broken into two separate entities; states routinely rely on each other for goods and services. Heavily populated liberal states, as much as they disdain rural America, rely on the Midwest for a majority of their food. A national divorce would also make our economy and our country more vulnerable to foreign attacks. The consequences on a global stage could be catastrophic.

It seems that this idea of a “national divorce” is a proposed solution that largely comes from Generation X. This is ironic considering Gen X is the first generation that normalized divorces in society. But we all know that divorce doesn’t work for children and is not the best solution to a problem. If it doesn’t work on a small scale, it certainly will not work on a national stage. These are complicated issues that can’t be reduced to simple solutions.
