Lizzo Proves That Self-Love Is A Scam

When you think Lizzo, you think “self-love” and “body positivity.” She has spent a great deal of time cultivating her entire brand and identity on these two philosophies. A majority of her content consists of videos and photos of herself dancing or posing half-naked (or totally naked) as evidence to the world that despite being dangerously overweight, she’s happy and feels beautiful.

Don’t get me wrong; I think all HEALTHY sizes (something that should be determined between you and your doctor, not you and Instagram) should be celebrated whether you’re on the thinner end or curvier end. There is a difference between taking care of your body that God gave you and glorifying over-eating or under-eating. That being said, I thought it was extremely interesting that this week Lizzo shared that she doesn’t feel beautiful.

My heart breaks for Lizzo; I’m sure it’s frustrating coming up short when you tell yourself that you’re beautiful enough, smart enough, and love yourself enough. The hard truth is, we won’t ever be able to love ourselves enough or feel complete just looking inside of ourselves. If it was that easy, why is the self-help genre as lucrative as it is?

My friend Allie Stuckey wrote an incredible book about this VERY subject. She talks about how even if you don’t feel like you’re enough, that’s okay. We weren’t designed to be. That’s why we were made to worship and love our Creator, Jesus Christ. In Him alone, we will feel completed and loved unconditionally. Proof? God sent his Son, Jesus, to die on the cross to save us from our sins. ALL OF THEM. Even the most hidden secrets about ourselves that we don’t want anyone to know. THAT is how much He loves us.

So if you’re like Lizzo and struggling with self-love, you aren’t the only one. Just don’t make the mistake of looking inside of yourself for the answer.
