White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters during a press briefing Wednesday that the actions taken by Texas to secure the southern border are “atrocious,” and called the razor wire barrier in the Rio Grande a “political stunt.”

A reporter asked the Press Secretary if the administration approved of the measures being taken by Texas to restrict the flow of illegal immigrants into the U.S.

“Texas has been installing these buoys along with razor wire on the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass,” a reporter stated during the press briefing. The reporter also mentioned that Mexico recently filed a diplomatic complaint to have the razor wire barriers removed. “They say the state is violating international treaties and that they raised this with the administration three weeks ago. Do you agree with Mexico that Texas is violating these international treaties?”

Jean-Pierre claimed that the Texas Governor “treated the situation that we’re seeing at the border in an inhumane way,” and said, “Instead of dealing with this issue in a way that we can get to a resolution and working together, he turns it into a political stunt.”

In June, Texas Governor Greg Abbott announced the installation of the razor wire, in addition to the new floating buoy barrier that would stretch the bank of the Rio Grande River in Eagle Pass, Texas. The projects are meant to deter illegal and dangerous river crossings, which have led to the deaths of hundreds of migrants and even some border agents.

“Migrant activists fear that the buoys will create a greater risk to those attempting to swim across who will encounter a large floating barricade in their way. Despite this, the Texas Governor feels that the buoys are the best way to prevent individuals from attempting to cross at all.”

Millions of illegal migrants have made their way into the U.S. since 2021, flooding not only border communities, but also larger sanctuary cities around the country. Those who are apprehended by border patrol are given “notice to appear” letters and a court date, but only about 10 percent are present when that day arrives, according to border agents who spoke with TPUSA reporters.
