I know many schools are mandating vaccines for the fall, but some policies just seem particularly egregious. 

Below is a direct email acquired by TPUSA’s National Field Program sent to the freshmen class from the administration at Wheaton College in Chicago. 

“We write with an important update about plans for Fall semester. As announced last spring, the College strongly encourages all students, faculty, and staff to be fully vaccinated. We will hold classes and co-curricular activities in person and at full room capacity. Our goal is to return to an open campus, provide a mask-free environment, and allow freedom of movement off campus.”

As the email shows, Wheaton’s “goal” is to allow freedom of movement—OFF CAMPUS!

Last I checked, the First Amendment ALREADY ALLOWS freedom of movement and the right to peaceable assembly. Who put Wheaton College’s administrative staff above the Constitution of the United States?

Though the school is private, it seems like a violation of student’s rights and—at the very least—the WRONG message to send to students. These young freshmen are being molded to believe that their administration gives and takes away rights endowed to them—by their Creator!

The worst thing Wheaton College can learn from a virus that escaped a communist dictatorship like China is to ACT like China when we deal with the fallout! Wheaton College should NOT feel entitled to control students’ movements when they are not even on campus!

But the story doesn’t end there because Wheaton College parents reacted, prompting an email from the Wheaton College administration. 

Wheaton College sent a damage-control email which the Professor Watchlist team found below and provided below:

“We have received messages from some parents regarding testing and masking requirements for unvaccinated students. Some parents have thanked us for the announced protocols. In contrast, others have expressed concern about the unknown long-term effects of the vaccine, about the perception that the June 21 email to students created time pressure to be fully vaccinated before the August 1 attestation deadline, or about the perception that unvaccinated students will be ostracized for wearing masks. We are grateful to those who wrote to express their opinions respectfully and prayerfully, and we honor how much everyone cares for their students and for the mission of Wheaton College.”

As you can see, Wheaton College thanks parents for reacting to the initial email. Wheaton then states that the university is not issuing mandatory vaccinations for students. 

Instead, they’ve opted for a scarlet letter for all UNVACCINATED students! Check this out:

“Fully vaccinated people (defined as those who are two weeks or more beyond their final dose) are not required to wear masks on campus. We anticipate that some vaccinated individuals will prefer to wear a mask. Unvaccinated individuals on campus are expected to wear a face-covering indoors, which is especially important when social distancing is not possible when we are at full capacity for class, chapel, and some large indoor events.”
