Have you ever thought about what unifies us as Americans? And I’m not talking about what LEGALLY unifies us or the “geography” that connects but something that we all have embedded in us.
Well, I was doing some thinking, and I came to the conclusion that it’s ideas.
No matter where you go, Americans have ideas; we’re thinkers.
Now you might say, “but Graham, EVERYONE has ideas.” And I can understand where you might get that from, but honestly, there’s more to it than just that.
I’m not saying that other countries have nothing going on. I mean that no matter where you go, you’ll find Americans that are actively in thought or are in a stage of life that requires thought. I’m talking about goals, missions, motivations, wants, needs, sacrifices, beliefs, non-beliefs, opinions, ethics, and more things of that nature.
We often think that the division in our country is evil, and I believe that the violence and terrible things that stem from the division are inherently evil. BUT, what a privilege it is to have division in this country.
Many countries and people groups don’t have that luxury. They’re told what to think, what to do, and what to say.
In this country, it’s in our DNA to think about something and take a stance about it and, better yet, to stand firm in that.
While division is a symptom of that ability, let’s never forget that Americans were born with the innate sense to think and to think well.
