What it is Like to Hunt Mule Deer in Sonora, Mexico
Well, I made it back from Sonora, Mexico!
I had the opportunity to go Mule Deer hunting in Sonora, Mexico where it is known to have giant deer down in the desert! Not going to lie, I always get a little eerie hearing about traveling over our southern border, but I have been twice before with the same hunting outfitter so I had an idea of what to expect.
We flew into Tucson and traveled down to the Sasabe Border Crossing to cross into Mexico. This specific crossing has low traffic since it’s especially in the middle of nowhere. I had seen the border wall before but still every time it’s a sight to see.
While we were getting our firearms checked through the border on the U.S. side we saw a truck bed full of illegal immigrants being brought back over to be dropped back off. I had always heard about that going on at the border, but It was a big realization to me that this is an everyday thing for the people living here.

After our guns were checked with all the proper paperwork on the U.S. side we drove through and again got checked on the Mexico side. Sure enough, the truck bed of immigrants were right there unloading and walking back into the street. I overheard someone say ” They’ll probably try again tomorrow!”
We stayed at a lodge/house that was on one of the ranches. (Picture below) Somehow I didn’t take pictures of the rest of the place but this was the outside. There was 7 of us and we all shared 2 rooms and 1 bathroom…. yes ONE bathroom.. that was fun. The weather was a bit chilly getting down into the high 20s and warming up to mid 60s during the day. Needless to say we spent a lot of time around the fire trying to stay warm since there were no heaters or anything keeping us warm inside. However, I did discover wool blankets are a BIG MUST in those sleeping conditions. They may not be the softest but they are very warm.

The hunt lasted 5 days and I’m excited to say I was SUCCESSFUL! How everything panned out was truly insane and could have gone so many different ways. This was my third trip down here chasing Muley’s but I had never been successful before (for Muley’s, I has a successful coues deer in 2021 with the same outfitter). Read my Instagram caption for a full run down of how my hunt played out!
It was a great trip spent with even better people! I always get asked how I felt as far as safety over there- I generally felt safe. I think I will always be on my toes and more alert being in a foreign country, especially one where all you ever hear is negative and violent stories. Don’t get me wrong… I’m on my toes here in the U.S. as well, something can always happen anywhere. TYJ for the 2nd amendment (in the U.S. of course)! I’ve been fortunate to travel to a lot of places across the world and it is always so humbling to see third world country and the way of life in places like this. I’m very thankful for these experiences!
