What is with the Stanley Cup Obsession?

Ladies … this is getting out of hand.
Materialism has such a strong grasp on millennial women that they are now camping outside stores for “exclusive drops” of a Stanley 40-ounce Tumbler. But let’s be real, these are just sippy cups for adult women.
I’m not trying to be a hater — I am, however, going to break down this cup craze.
Over the last few decades, materialism and “micro trends” have kept society running. Whether it is new fashion items or cups, companies have utilized this to their marketing advantage. With the rise of influencer culture further promoting opulent lifestyles and unattainable social media perfection, something as silly as a cup gets people’s attention and it SELLS!
The Stanley Tumblr retails for $50. Depending on the color, the resale value could skyrocket upwards of $300 for the most recent merchandise drop. Stanley has capitalized on this ongoing craze by having collaborations with other companies and having limited edition colors. Target exclusively carried the Stanley Valentines collection featuring a bright red and pink color, which at some locations sold out within minutes of the store opening.
This week the Stanley X Starbucks limited edition Winter Pink Tumblr cup cleared the shelves as people were lined up outside of Target stores as early as 3:00 AM — just to get this cup! Women were lined up at their local Target rushing to the displays attempting to get their hands on this new color. Customers fought, stole, and waited in long lines just for a chance to see and maybe purchase the new shiny pink cup.
One TikTok user commented “Stanley definitely knows what they are doing. Everyone and their mom wants one. IDK I still can’t wrap my head around paying that much for a cup.“
Buyers, remember: this is still just a cup, that isn’t even entirely leakproof, and will not fit in every cup holder.
What is with the hype? Is a 40-ounce tumbler really worth waiting hours in line for? Is it worth spending hundreds of dollars just to collect these cups as if they are iPhones?
Just like the hydro flask trends, these cups won’t last much longer, and soon we will start to see hundreds of Stanley cups end up in your local Goodwill.
These cups have taken over women’s lives.
