It’s a tumultuous time after the released draft opinion document from SCOTUS Judge Alito regarding Roe v Wade. There are people yelling from both sides. Everyone is emotional but what is the truth about abortion? How do we navigate this highly debated topic? In my opinion, the best place to look for the truth is in the Bible.

“But, the Bible never says anything about abortion,” pro-choicers will say. While the word “abortion” is not in the Bible, God has plenty to say about protecting the innocent. Let’s debunk this myth that somehow abortion is permissible because it’s not explicitly stated in the Bible…

Simply put, abortion is the murder of innocent life. God is abundantly clear on this through Scripture. Here are a few examples:

Jeremiah 1:5 (ESV) – “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

Psalm 139:13-16 (ESV) – For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately …

Babies clearly have innate value and deserve every right to life in these passages.

The Bible also states that the baby inside a pregnant woman (reminder: women are the only sex that can get pregnant), is indeed a human being:

Exodus 21:22-23 (ESV)- “When men strive together and hit a pregnant woman, so that her children come out, but there is no harm, the one who hit her shall surely be fined, as the woman’s husband shall impose on him, and he shall pay as the judges determine. But if there is harm, then you shall then you shall pay life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe.”

I believe the devil and his demons rejoice when the innocent are killed, seeing human life as just some sort of inconvenience that we can dispose of at any point.

A baby is a not a clump of cells. It is a human with immense value made in God’s image.

Genesis 9:6 (ESV) – “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image.”

While I do understand this is a highly emotional topic and sympathize with those affected by rape and incest, which account for less than 1% of abortions, the best option is NOT the death of a baby. Two wrongs don’t make a right.

If you are a man or woman of faith, I believe God deserves our trust. Too many of us believe that circumstances and environments trump the power of God. Due to financial hardship, lack of supportive communities, “not ready” to be a parent and other circumstances that are used as justification of the killing of an innocent life are disregarding the fact that God is a God of miracles. He can do immensely more than we could ever do on our own. The baby deserves a chance at life regardless of circumstance.

Also, if you’re not ready to be a parent. Don’t perform the actions that lead to becoming one. It’s that simple.

Hebrews 13:4 (ESV) – “Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.”

Christian men and men in general, I need to talk to you. You might not have a uterus but you should have an opinion based on the truth regarding abortion. You need to be leaders and stop encouraging and engaging in transactional relationships where you believe you can disrespect women and God’s gift with no consequences. Women deserve better from us.

Finally, if you or someone you know has had an abortion, if you’re a man who has encouraged an abortion, please know that this is 100% forgivable and reconciliation can be found. I don’t say these things to condemn you or anyone else in a sense of moral or spiritual superiority. Only God has that authority over us. I’m merely sharing His words.

I want to make sure the life of God’s creation is protected and we all receive the truth in love. God Bless!
