Vice President JD Vance is set to visit the US-Mexico border on Wednesday, accompanied by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The visit comes as illegal crossings along the southern border have declined significantly since President Donald Trump took office.
The officials will travel to Eagle Pass, Texas, where they are expected to tour a federal immigration processing facility, according to the Daily Wire. The area gained national attention during the Biden administration when Texas authorities took control of a park used to process and release illegal immigrants, sparking a dispute between state and federal officials.
“President Trump is keeping his promise to secure the border and bring safety BACK to America,” Vance said in a post on X. “Tomorrow I’ll be visiting the southern border to highlight the incredible progress this administration has made thanks to his leadership.”
The presence of Gabbard and Hegseth are part of the Trump administration’s commitment to using the “full might” of the federal government, including the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, and the Department of Justice, to carry out deportations.
“In 30 days, the president sealed the border shut, declared the cartels to be terrorist organizations, has increased ICE deportations to levels not seen in decades, and we are shortly on the verge of achieving a pace and speed of deportations this country has never before seen,” White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy Stephen Miller said in a recent statement.
Hegseth recently approved the deployment of 3,000 additional troops to the southern border to bolster security. The Department of Defense has also assisted with deportation flights and is preparing Guantanamo Bay Naval Base to house criminal illegal immigrants.
