The US Department of State has revoked the visas of 50 Mexican politicians amid efforts to address drug trafficking and other cartel operations in Mexico. The exact relationship between these politicians and any cartel is reportedly based on suspicion.

According to Reuters, “One of the sources, a senior Mexican politician, said more than 50 politicians from the ruling Morena party have had their visas revoked, as well as dozens of officials from other political parties. The sources requested anonymity to speak on a sensitive topic.”

A US State Department official told Reuters why a visa may be revoked:

“Visas, including those held by foreign officials, may be revoked at any time [for] activities that run contrary to America’s national interest,” the official stated. “The Trump administration has had a good working relationship with the Sheinbaum government, and we look forward to continuing to advance our bilateral relationship in the interest of the America first foreign policy agenda.”

Anonymous sources within the Mexican government said the visa revocations have been applied to several members of the ruling Morena party, of which Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum is a member.

Reuters further noted that other countries have similarly found their officials met with revocations.

“In Brazil, more than 20 top judges and officials have lost their visas, while in Costa Rica, at least 14 politicians and business leaders, including former president and Nobel Prize Peace laureate Oscar Arias, have had theirs revoked. Arias, who had been critical of Trump on social media, said he was given no reason for the revocation,” the outlet noted.

No official statement from the US government has come forth regarding this situation.
