The Supreme Court of the United States recently ruled 5-4 that Governor Newsom’s imposed limits on in-home religious gatherings in the state of California were unconstitutional, violating Americans’ rights under the First Amendment to the Constitution.
Despite being a close vote, the result of the ruling is hardly surprising–especially after a similar decision was made by the High Court on restrictive limits on religious gatherings in the state of New York in November.
These cases are so enlightening when it comes to the original purpose of our United States Constitution. This is not a document written for the times in the 1700s–it is a document written to stand the test of time. It was made to last in a constantly evolving, modern world. Our Constitutional Framers understood that the God-given rights of human beings would always be under attack from one direction or another (though I doubt they could have predicted the frequency and scope of just how under attack they’d be, especially in COVID-2021 America).
Thus, the Constitution was written not to grant rights to Americans from the government but to shield the government from imposing on the rights that are fundamental to any human being–including the right to worship freely.
