University of Virginia Hospital Ends Transgender Procedures for New Patients

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin announced Friday that the University of Virginia (UVA) Board of Visitors has approved a resolution to stop providing transgender-related medical treatments to new patients.

“Common sense and medical ethics have prevailed. I’m grateful to the University of Virginia Board of Visitors for its action today to stop harmful transgender treatments for minors and to transfer existing patients to other providers,” Youngkin explained in a post on X.

The resolution states that current transgender-identifying patients at UVA’s hospital may continue treatment, but new patients must be ”referred to alternate private healthcare providers until further notice.”

The decision follows President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at stopping children from receiving transgender medical procedures. After the order was issued, UVA Health and other hospitals temporarily paused gender-related treatments for patients under 19. Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares wrote a memo instructing UVA and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) health systems to comply with the order, warning that failure to do so could result in the loss of federal funding.

“Hospitals and institutions that continue to mutilate children place themselves at significant legal risk and face substantial financial exposure,” Miyares said, according to 8News. “Given these risks, my office will be closely monitoring this issue and the actions of the Commonwealth’s agencies.”

Federal judges have temporarily blocked Trump’s order restricting transgender procedures for minors, but legal battles are expected to continue.

Last week, UVA saw nearly 300 people gather on campus to participate in a protest organized by “Indivisible Charlottesville,” a local chapter of a national organization protesting the Trump administration. Additionally, a group of UVA medical students published an op-ed in the student newspaper, The Cavalier Daily, protesting Trump’s order and Miyares’ memo.

“The President’s executive order is based on false claims that providing minors with gender-affirming care is tantamount to physical and psychological mutilation,” the students claimed.
